Performer Callout for “Generations”

If you’d like this information in a different format, including by phone or in-person, please email or call 0117 939 3902 (leave a voice message with your phone number if we miss your call).

The Desperate Men are seeking a young (18-25y/o) female-identifying, non-binary or gender non-conforming performer from the Global Majorities to join the cast of “Generations” – an outdoor show launching this Summer. “Generations” will celebrate and look into inter-generational relationships and the way the current social, political, and ecological situations impact each of us differently.

You do not need to be hugely experienced. We are looking for someone who might feel confident and interested to perform outdoors on the streets and all that involves.

We’re looking for a big playful personality that shines. We are keen to support, enable and learn from fresh faces. Courage, openness and reliability are more important than experience, training or credits.

The role will involve performing, dancing, and talking. You will be part of the creation process and we will value your input and voice in the room. The creation period is only 2 weeks long so being adaptable, dynamic and resilient is essential.

Outdoor work also requires mental and physical stamina to handle weather conditions, big crowds, small crowds, last minute changes and audiences who can walk away at any moment if we don’t hold their attention…

We will all get “stuck in” to make the show happen creatively and practically to the best of our abilities.

We look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested in this project and is fully available for the specified dates – this includes any disabled performers or performers with access requirements which we will do our best to meet bearing in mind the reality of our small budget and short timing for this project. Please note that our rehearsal space unfortunately only has step access (3 steps) and no wheelchair accessible toilet at this time.

All creation/rehearsal days in Bristol. Ideally seeking South West/local performers. Performers must have their own base in Bristol.

We will cover all travel expenses whilst on tour and accommodation where necessary. We are all freelancers for taxation purposes on this project.

To apply, please send us in writing, video, or audio recording:

  • Some information about yourself as an Artist
  • Why this project interests you
  • What the word “inter-generation” makes you think of

You can be literal or creative in your reply (for example you can write out your bio and do a weird dance about “inter-generations”, a poem, a song… But writing/talking is also absolutely fine). Whatever format is easiest and inspires you most!

Please send your application to by May 25th (end of day).

The Project

This show might well be Desperate Men’s last show, a final celebration. This 2022 tour is hopefully a preview for a larger tour in 2023.

‘Generations’ will look back on 42 years of work, checking out how audiences are feeling in today’s challenging climate, and handing over the baton to a younger, diverse group of artists & performers.

Company Background

The Desperate Men are an outdoor arts company based in Easton, Bristol.

We are not all men. It’s a historic label that stuck.

We were founded in Berlin in 1980 and this September celebrates 42 years of creating shows, events, and festivals in many settings both outdoors and indoors.

Our work is devised by us and our collaborators. It is often warm, accessible to all ages, comic, physical, musical, and a bit surreal. It aims to be entertaining with serious issues bubbling underneath.

We are a small team of 2 Artistic Directors, a Musical Director, and freelance artists that we recruit for each project depending on the needs.

There is a lot of information and films on our website.
